Thank you everyone who made it out last night! It was quite the honor to hosted The Orphan Barrel Whiskey Launch for a 2nd year in a row!
At the LA launch of the latest @orphanbarrel release, Gifted Horse. It’s a blend of American whiskies bottled at 57.5% ABV, the highest of the series so far: 38.5% 17yo from Bernheim, 51% 4yo MGP bourbon, and 10.5% 4yo MGP corn whiskey.
The official story is that the blend was an accident, first called “Project Whoops” internally (take that as you will), and that it’ll never be repeated or released again.
It’s also the cheapest OB so far at $50 MSRP, though if you’re looking for maximum age for minimum price, this isn’t a value bottle – see Josh’s review at thewhiskeyjug.com for the OB price-per-age breakdown.
Let’s talk taste. They set a high bar by opening w a pour of Rhetoric 21 – my hands-down favorite of the OBs – and I think the GH suffered by comparison. Nose: light, bright, young, caramel, citrus, toasted coconut. The young corn dominates on the palate, with some cinnamon & orange candy, while the older whiskey’s oak tannins dominate the finish, fairly sharp & dry.
Just one pour, and not ideal conditions, but not my favorite. OB completists will likely snap it up, but I’d recommend saving up for the next Rhetoric release.
